Why is it that everything so bad for you is always so good? And oh yeah, I’m talking about food.
My sister came down to visit my family from Colorado for the week, so she recommended she wanted to eat something that’s only a ‘California thing’. I figured that would mean a Cali Burrito or In N’ Out animal-style everything. BUT she said let’s go to Slater’s 50/50. While I have heard it once in my entire life, at the moment I had no idea what she was talking about. So of course, as soon as I got to work I googled it and sure enough I came upon the some delicious looking burgers on a website.
Slater’s 50/50 is strictly a So-Cal joint. It started off in Anaheim hills in 2009 by a guy named Scott Slater. And since then it has so far expanded to six places, the most recent is going to open up in San Marcos in North County San Diego on April 14. (And you bet I will be going there because that’s my original hometown and I’m stoked to go back to Slater’s)
Now what makes this burger so different from the rest of the burger places out there? Well the burger itself is made up of 50% ground beef and 50% ground BACON. Yup I just said BACON. Now I love me some bacon, so as soon as I read that I was all for it and immediately after I picked up my sister from the airport it was straight to Slater’s we went.
The San Diego location is not far from the airport, so anyone that visits San Diego and lands in the San Diego International Airport should definitely make this their first or even their last stop in San Diego for some good-eating.
I was very stoked to go eat here, but a big warning, you may have to wait a bit to get a seat and actually eat. We figured it was a Wednesday night around 8 p.m. it shouldn’t be so bad of a wait. We were definitely wrong, the wait took 45 minutes for just two people. Now I have to say that the wait is definitely worth it for the burger because that burger was so delicious. While me and my sister were a bit impatient and very hungry. They had a nice patio seating and bar area, so while you wait you could grab some beers sit by the fires and maybe play a big game of Jenga.
Once we were finally seated, we once again had to wait for our burger and we, unfortunately, got stuck in the back corner outside so our waitress kept forgetting about us. So the service, for us, pretty much sucked. But once we got our burgers, I was pretty golden.
This burger felt like heaven. Call it the great big hunger in me (I prepared myself by trying to not eat so much during the day) but it was DELICIOUS. I opted for the original 50/50 burger and my sister got the B’ B’ B’ Bacon burger. I wanted to build my own burger, but I had no patience and I was so hungry I would’ve put everything on my burger.
When the burger came I was in awe. I got just the regular 1/3 lb. burger, but if you want to get the ¼ pounder or the full pound burger then by all means, it is a great burger and I would totally have upgraded to the ¼ pounder if I had known how delicious it was. My 50/50 came with their original patty, avocado mash, a sunny side up egg, pepper jack cheese, chipotle adobo mayo on white brioche and a pickle on the side and my sister’s was bacon galore. Forewarning, this place you’d have to order fries as extra, but we came for the burger alone and I was very satisfied, plus the extra grease, not so good.
After our burgers, my sister got a free coupon for a birthday bacon brownie. YUP bacon brownie. I’ve had chocolate covered bacon at the Del Mar Fair before and I was not a big fan. And I’ll have to say, not that much of a bacon lover to love the bacon brownie either. At first it was pretty good, the ice cream really helped keep things at bay. But after a while the salty sweet of the bacon brownie became a little overwhelming that both me and my sister decided to take off the bacon part and just eat the brownie and ice cream. But hey, I at least tried it. Just not a fan.
So overall, while the wait is long, the burger is well worth it. For anyone visiting So-Cal it is a definite place to try for burgers. When I come back I’ll have to try their specials of the month, and this month it’s the Gyro Burger and my love for Greek food is saying hell yes, go back and get that before it’s gone!
The San Diego Slater’s 50/50 is located 2750 Dewey Road #193, San Diego, Ca 92106. They are open Mon-Thurs from 11a.m. – 11p.m. and Fri-Sat 11a.m. – 12a.m. And for all you happy hour lovers, they have happy hour from 3p.m. – 6p.m. Mon-Fri and then from 10p.m. – close Sun-Thurs with $3.50 on select drinks and appetizers.
Cheers and happy eating my fellow travelers.
UPDATE: I mentioned earlier in my post how I wanted to go back and try the GYRO BURGER. Well before heading off to Vegas back in April, my boyfriend and I decided to stop by Slater’s in San Marcos and get this burger to go. All I can say is, Heaven. If only this burger wasn’t just for the month of April, I’d be going to Slater’s much more.
