The San Diego County Fair or known as The Fab Fair for this year’s theme was quite a full-filling experience. And I mean that literally.

Located at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, which is the Del Mar Racetracks, as usual, the fair consisted of lots of unhealthy eating, thrill rides that make you re-think having eaten that deep fried corndog, and so many little shops you feel like you’re in an infomercial. And even though my body hated me the next day after binge eating grease and who knows what else, I am so glad I got to have a big cheat day and eat all that delicious food.

The San Diego County fair has always been special to me. I’ve grown up going to the SD Fair; it’s always a big deal in San Diego, as is any fair in any city really. But this fair has always been my main one. I mean I’ve performed a dance on one of the concert stages, worked for a radio station during the Michael Jackson zombie tribute, did the scary bungee ball ride.

But this year, we focused on the food, as it’s supposed to be.

The fair is always known for making the most outrageously bad, but actually so good, food for you. And every year the heart cloggers get more and more grandiose. While I didn’t try it, this year’s big heart attack item was called the Triple Decker Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger and I have heard reviews that it is good. I guess it tastes like it sounds: a cheeseburger wrapped around two glazed donuts, so if you’re up for it. I say, why not?

This year I tried a plethora of foods. The last time I was at the fair I only tried the bacon wrapped hotdog and the fried ice cream, both quite delicious.

This time my list goes like this:

Australian Battered Potatoes– My absolute favorite fried food of them all. We got a plate to try because I’ve only heard such good things about it and I ended up buying another bucket because it was just that delicious. These potatoes were deliciously fried to perfection and were topped off with ranch and cheese and were heaven in our mouths. While the bucket did push my stomach to the edge, I do not regret any bite I took from these gold brown heaven potatoes.

Carne Asada Hot Dog – Exactly how it sounds, carne asada with grilled onions and other vegetables and cheese all on top of a hot dog, muy bien.

Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog – A classic that tastes fantastic.

Funnel Cake – It’s a fair, so you have to get a funnel cake. There is supposedly a Nutella funnel cake, but we opted for a blueberry, strawberry and cream funnel cake. It was all delicious until we found a piece of metal in our cake. YEP A SMALL SCRAP METAL, so please be careful to everyone when eating, sometimes things may get hectic in the kitchen and they don’t realize metal objects GET IN OUR FOOD. We definitely weren’t so happy about finding that.

Mom’s Bakeshoppe – Ice Cream Sandwich and Cookie Brownie – This was located in the corner of the shopping areas and it was so adorable and it looked so good. And, of course, it was quite delicious. But my only concern was the ice cream and cookie both got a little hard to eat because it seemed to be too frozen to my own liking.

And last, but not least.

Kettle corn – I love the fair kettle corn. A medium bag got me a good amount of delicious sweet and salty popcorn that lasted days after I first bought it. Oh my, oh my, how I wish I had some of that kettle corn right now.

While that is all we ate and were quite stuffed to the brim, there are millions of other places to try foods at like the bacon wrapped everything food place and just so much more. The smell will be a bit overwhelming, but everything I’m sure will be amazing. But either bring your parents or a fat wallet ‘cause while everything sounds great, it’s not exactly the cheapest.

But hey, food isn’t the only thing at the fair. There are tons of thrill rides, none of which seemed good to do after eating, unfortunately. And after seeing one of the rides get stuck, I’m a little weary of fair rides. And if you’re willing to spend some dollar bills on games, be my guest, but they are much harder than it looks.

There’s also a ton of little shops, many of which are ones that you see from infomercials, but they’re in real life! There is also art from local artists and all sorts of little knick-knack places that you don’t have to pay for. And you can’t forget the music! There is usually always a concert somewhere that ranges from the blues to some boy bands. And on certain days, days that probably have already passed the international beer festival arrives in the gates of the fair, and for all you beer lovers, I’m sure you’d love that.

As you can see, the Fab Fair was a good time and will continue to be a good time until its end date of July 6 where upon the Del Mar Horseraces will start (Time to whip out the fancy hats and tea dresses!)

Fair tickets are $14 dollars at the gates or $12 at the Albertson/Sav-On stores. But hurry, the San Diego Fair is only open until Sunday and you don’t want to miss out. Because what I truly love about this fair is that it’s so close to the beach that we’re able to go to the beach all day and eat all night.

Cheers to the San Diego County Fair.
